Financial Support in Sixth Form

At The City Academy, Hackney we will offer 2 different Bursary Funds:

  1. Vulnerable groups Bursary
  2. Discretionary Bursary

LEVEL 1: VULNERABLE GROUPS BURSARY

Bursary for students in vulnerable groups

You may be able to get a bursary if at least one of the following applies:

  • You’re in or you recently left local authority care
  • You get Income Support or Universal Credit because you’re financially supporting yourself
  • You get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit
  • You get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in your name and either ESA or Universal Credit

The amount you may get depends on the costs you have and what you need for your course. This might include money for books, equipment or travel costs to school.

LEVEL 2: DISCRETIONARY BURSARY

You can apply to a discretionary bursary if you’re over 19 and either:

These 2 groups of students can receive a discretionary bursary while they continue to attend education (in the case of a 19+ continuer, this must be the same programme they started before they turned 19), as long as their eligibility continues and their institution considers they need the additional support to continue their participation. Students aged 19 or over are not eligible for the vulnerable student bursary. The discretionary awards should be made to the following learners:

a. Learners in other vulnerable groups:

  • Young people with LDD or any disability but who are not in receipt of ESA or DLA or PIP or UC
  • Young Carers
  • Teenage Parents who are not in receipt of income support or UC
  • Young Offenders

b. Learners on free school meals and / or whose family income is below £26,000 per year

  • Young people in receipt of free school meals in previous school
  • Total household income includes employee or self-employed income and/or all benefits including child benefit, child tax credit, working tax credit, PIP, Carers allowance, IS, UC, ESA etc. (Receipt of bursary funding does not affect receipt of other means-tested benefits paid to families)

c. Learners from far distance travelling and/or in financial disadvantage and / or have other dependent children and/or both twins attending The City Academy, Hackney and/or disabled family members

Discretionary bursary awards should be targeted towards young people facing financial barriers to participation, such as the costs of transport, meals, books and equipment. There is a possibility of no award or a limited award even after meeting the criteria above and not necessarily all applications submitted will be awarded. Each application will be assessed on their individual level of financial needs.
