Principal’s Update
Published: Fri 25 October 2024Dear Parents/Carers,
As we reach the end of our first half-term, I’d like to express how proud The City Academy Hackney is of all our students and what we have already achieved. Our year 7, 10 and 12 students have made smooth transitions to new key stages and have settled in really well. The dedication and hard work shown by our year 11 and year 13 students as they prepare for their exams is impressive: their first set of mock exams will begin very soon after the break.
We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved and restful break, returning refreshed and ready to continue the fantastic work we’ve started this term.
Founders’ Day 2024On Thursday 7th November 9-10am, we will hold our annual Founders’ Day which is our opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students in the Summer 2024 GCSE exams. All past and present students from the 2024 cohort are invited. Please note the academy will open at 10.15am to students in all other year groups on that day. Students must be in school by 10.30am at the latest.
Relationship & Sex Education (RSE)Afterthehalf term holiday, all year groups will be learning about Relationship and Sex Education during their PHSCE lessons. If you would prefer to withdraw your student from being part of this please click here.
Duke of Edinburgh Expedition
Last weekend, our Year 12 students set out for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition. The expedition went very well with everyone completing the first day’s walk in high spirits. Despite more challenging weather on the second day, the students persevered and finished the walk with determination. This experience served as excellent preparation for the final expedition taking place this summer.
Black History Month
As part of our ongoing celebration of Black History Month, students participated in student-led assemblies, workshops and extra activities in lessons and after school. The celebration concluded with an outstanding performance focused on this year’s theme Reclaiming the Narrative. The performance featured music, spoken word and theatre including the year 12 Performing Arts students’ powerful devised piece on the themes of identity and prejudice. Congratulations to all students involved and thank you to all the staff who contributed their time and energy to making it such a success.
Cambridge Trip
As part of our PHSCE lessons, year 7 students have been learning about pathways to university. Some of our students got the opportunity to visit Cambridge University where they participated in a variety of activities, starting with an introductory talk on the significance of higher education, followed by a tour of the university and culminating in a taster lecture to give them a glimpse of university life.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream Performance
This term, year 7 have been studying Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They studied the text in class focusing on the characters and key themes and then each class was responsible for rehearsing a scene from the play. This week, students performed these scenes for their peers and parents. The event highlighted year 7 students’ dedication to learning and achievement. Some of the set design and props were particularly impressive and these contributed significantly to the success of the performance.
